We get it. No REALLY we get it. There seem like endless Surfboard Bag options and honestly, with us, there are. If all of our options have your head spinning hopefully this article will help. If you'll stick with me, in this article I'll attempt to go over the differences between the Shortboard Bag, Funboard Bag and Longbaord Bag and yes, there are differences even the avid surfer might over look. So, if you're in the market for a Surfboard Bag and you're just not sure what you need, hang in there, we're here to help.

Shortboard, Funboard, Longboard. What are your measurements?

Once you have your measurements you can really narrow down you're choices if you verify what kind of surfboard you have. Generally speaking a Shortboard is under 6'6", a Longboard is longer than 8'0" and a Funboard can over lap each of those while filling the gap in between. A Shortboard will have a narrow nose coming to a point, a Funboard will have a fuller, more rounded nose and a Longboard will be completely rounded out. Typically, a Shortboard will be the thinnest of the three, followed by a Funboard, with a Longboard being the thickest. For these very reasons, Shortboard Bags, Funboard Bags and Longboard Bags will all be cut very differently and when it comes to protecting your Surfboard, Surfboard Bag fit is king.

The Time Has come to Choose a Surfboard Bag.

Now that you have your measurements and you know if you have a Shortboard, Funboard or Longboard, you're ready to choose a Surfboard Bag. Keep in mind that there are all types of variations here, so when in doubt stick to your measurements. At The Surfboard Warehouse every Surfboard Bag we have listed should show you the measurements, so at this point it's simple. Find a Shortboard Bag, Funboard Bag or Longboard Bag with the features you like and make sure your surfboard will fit. You DO NOT want a bag smaller than your board, but if you're over on the length by 3 to 6 inches your fine. When it comes to the width of the board bag, you want to add the width and thickness of your surfboard together and make sure your chosen Surfboard Bag is wider than that number. This way, your bag will have enough material to cover for the thickness of your Surfboard.

Surfboard Bags: "Which Features are Important on a Surfboard Bag?"

There are a ton of features available with today's Surfboard Bags, but how do you sort through the hype to find the features that actually matter? You stay right here, that's how. In this article I will attempt to review some of the most important Surfboard Bag features, some of which you may not even be aware of. Keep in mind, there are some features that you won't care about, but others will. So, sometimes it's not about which features are important on a Surfboard Bag, it's about which features are important to you.

Different Surfboard Bags and Different Materials.

Past this, you should take a look at the material your Surfboard Bag is made out of, does it have one side reflective, to keep your Surfboards cool? Does it have one side made out of some sort of heavy duty nylon, so your bag won't fall apart? These are both important things to take a look at when purchasing your new Surfboard Bag.

The Zippers on Your Board Bag Matter.

Next, an unlikely thing to look at is the zippers, what's the point of buying a new Surfboard Bag if the zippers are only going to last you a year and then crap out? I personally had a Prolite Travel Surfboard Bag for a very long time, I made tons of surf trips with it by my side, but after several years the zippers got very hard to use, then eventually they wouldn't budge at all. Please understand that this Surfboard Bag served me very well and lasted me a very long time, short of the zippers there was nothing wrong with the bag. If they didn't fail I probably could have gotten five more years out of this particular bag. Anyway, something to keep in mind, you want zippers that will hold up, like they did on my bag. Furthermore, some of our Surfboard Bag manufacturers have a lifetime guarantee on their zippers, so if they break, you just call them up and have them fixed.

Finding a Surf Bag that's Going to Fit.

Some companies we carry like FCS have begun experimenting with keeping the seams off the rails with some of the bags in the FCS Surfboard Bag line. If you think about it, that's probably a good idea. The rails of your surfboard are often the part taking the impact, if you move any seams off the rails you can make sure they're completely covered in padding. Similarly, when you look at our line of Surfboard Bags you'll see a ton of different styles, which is important. How your Surfboard Bag fits your surfboards is key to having the protection you need. Make sure you're getting a Surfboard Bag that's going to fit your surfboards. It's probably a good idea to take some measurements and call us, that way we can make sure your getting a snug fit.

Your Boardbag, YOUR Features.

Last there are a ton of more "personal" features, or bells and whistles, when it comes to Surfboard Bags some you'll care about and some you won't. Some Surfboard Bags have a wetsuit pouch with drain holds on the outside of the bag, could be a nice feature if you typically wear a wetsuit where you surf. Others have expandable gussets on the tale end of the bag, super important if you like keeping your surfboard fins in your surfboard 24/7. Some Travel Surfboard Bags come with tie downs, some come with pockets on the inside for fins and wax, on others those pockets are on the outside. Some have vents to keep your surfboards cool, which could be important if you're located in F.L. where the heat could seriously damage your surfboards. Also, think about the handles and straps, are they padded well? This is especially important with Surfboard Travel Bags, you might not think so, but trust me it is.

Choosing a Surfboard Bag should be a serious subject for any surfer. I mean what's the point of all the research done during the process of buying a new surfboard if you're not going get to the beach with that very board intact? All that time and research wasted, not to mention money and worse still, you could find yourself in a situation where the surf trip you've been planning for weeks or months (in some cases possibly years) is in jeopardy. I speak from experience, it's worth your time and money to make sure you have the right bag and in some cases this article could save you money, as you don't need to overspend. You simply need the right Surfboard Bag for your unique situation.

The Three Classifications of Surfboard Bags.

At the base level Surfboard Bags generally fall into three categories; surfboard socks, surfboard day bags and surfboard travel bags. Therefore, we must first decide what you're doing with your surfboard, are you storing it? Are you walking down the street to surf? Do you need to make a car ride to the beach in order to surf and if so will your surfboard be inside your car or on the roof? Perhaps you're planning a "surf trip" where air travel is involved. All of these are relevant questions to ask yourself when buying a Surfboard Bag.

The Surf Bag for Your Day to Day.

The most cost effective option is the surfboard sock, offering very minimal protection, yet small and lightweight, therefor easy to carry and easy to store. If you live within walking distance to the beach or are able to put your surfboard inside your car a surfboard sock is a very viable option as you don't necessary need an actual "Surfboard Bag". However, to me if you're putting your surfboard on the roof of your car I would choose a surfboard day bag instead. Day bags are typically designed with at least one side that's heat reflective so that your surfboard stays cooler while in the sun, which helps protect your board and keeps your wax from getting all over everything. Keep this in mind while storing your board as well, if your board will be taking direct sunlight, a surfboard day bag is a better option than a sock.

The Board Bag for Your Travels.

When it comes to Surfboard Bags, travel surfboard bags get a bit more tricky, but at base level are designed for air travel when you don't know who will be handling your surfboard(s) or what they might do to it/them. Travel bags are usually designed with 10 mm of foam vs 5 mm that comes standard with most day bags. DO NOT PLAN AIR TRAVEL USING A DAY BAG. I understand the desire to save money and not spring for the more pricey travel bag, but a day bag IS NOT designed for air travel, so you're just asking for a disaster. There are cost effective travel surfboard bags that don't offer all the bells and whistles, but still give you that key 10 mm foam padding.
