The tail of your board will truly give it the unique feel
you’re looking for. Basically when you break it down the more
volume you have in the tail, the more drive you going to get, with
emphasis on recovering easily. Less volume in the tail will give
you extra leverage, allowing you to turn on a dime. There are many variations
of tails but they all come from these basic types.
Squash Tail:(Most volume) If you’re looking for huge lip bashes, blazing speed and
deep sliding turns this tail is for you. There are variations of the
squash tail including; rounded squash and bump squash. A
rounded squash will provide smother turns, while the bump
squash allows the shaper to create a *higher performance rail.
* see “rails”
Pin Tail: This is what you look for to do monster roundhouses,
with emphasis on smooth surfing. These tails are sure to catch
you more barrels with great holding power. There are two basic
versions of the pin tail, the pin tail and the round pin. The difference
being the size of the surf, if your talking BIG surf the pin tail is
going to hold better that’s why this tail is common for your gun.
In slightly smaller or mushy surf you want the extra drive a round pin
will give you.
Swallow Tail:(Least volume) This tail is going to give you a different feel than the rest,
really the only tail for the “fish”. You can have a swallow tail
board designed for any wave size and it will give you HUGE tail
slides and tight lines on steep faces.
