Creatures of Leisure Surfboard Traction Pads: "The History, the Creatures Traction Pad"

When this years Creatures Traction came out I was looking through the line and realized that a lot of the same guys were still team riders, so I looked back for reference and found I was correct. In a world where some companies team riders change every season it seems like, Creatures of Leisure has had a core of the same team riders for some time now. I think that says a lot, I mean the guys must genuinely like Creatures of Leisure Traction Pads and Creatures must treat them well. Which should translate to Creatures of Leisure Traction treating you well and not letting you down either.

Creatures has touted the "thinnest" Surfboard Traction Pads on the market for as long as some can remember, but I know how and why this came about. As the story goes, back in the day when Taj Burrow surfed for Creatures, he was at the warehouse and said he needed a few new Traction Pads. Being Taj Burrow I'm sure no one objected and pointed him to a box of fresh Traction. Well, Taj was seen a few moments later, picking out some Creatures of Leisure Traction Pads and tossing others to the side. On the outside all the pads seemed the same, so when asked, "Taj, why are you keeping some pads and throwing out others?" The answer was simple. "I like the thinnest pad possible, it allows me to feel my surfboard better." There it is, off to the races and to this day Creatures of Leisure strives to make the thinnest Surfboard Traction Pads possible, (1mm) so you can better feel your board.

Something interesting this year, is Mick Fannings Surfboard Traction Pad. Not that Creatures of Leisure did a ton different here, but... there are two Mick Fanning Traction Pads! The Creatures of Leisure Mick Fanning Traction Pad and the Creatures of Leisure Mick "Eugene" Fanning Traction Pad. So what gives? Admittedly, at first I thought this was a little strange, but upon some research, I found out that the original Mick Fanning Pad is a bit smaller and lighter for Mick's performance surfboards and the "Eugene" Pad is wider, for his more "grovely" boards. Now, that's something isn't it? I mean, I personally have my "shortboard" and then my small wave board. If I found that I liked the Mick Fanning Traction Pad, in theory I would be able to have one for each board, with the "Eugene" Pad, covering the increased tail area on my small wave board. So, in hindsight, Creatures of Leisure may be on to something, we'll just have to wait and see.

One last interesting tidbit about Creatures of Leisure Traction Pads, this year is that Creatures has a few new "groove" patterns, the Square Loc II and Diamond Loc II. If you haven't experimented with different should! It's amazing what a different "groove" pattern will do for your grip. Maybe you should try some "cutouts" or some different "kick" styles? Sure you might think I'm full of it, but have you ever experimented with your Traction Pad? Trust me. Try it. You can do everything from reduce the rash you may get on your knees, to increase your grip and in Creatures of Leisure's case increase the "feel" of your surfboard. All of this will add up and with a bit of experimentation, you may find yourself landing that big cutty you previously always lost your grip on. Just saying. Anyway, Creatures of Leisure Traction Pads are very popular for us every year and I'm sure this year won't be any different.
