Futures Fins: "Futures Fins Unwavering Commitment"

For those of you that follow my work, you know I love innovation and it's interesting, there's two distinct sides to Futures Surfboard Fins an innovative side and an unwavering side. First, before anyone tries to correct me, (it happens all the time) I want to make sure it's understood that Futures Fins is the correct way to say it, it's not Future Fins. Now that that's out of the way, Futures Fins is one of the most innovative companies we have, but what I want to focus on here in this article is their unwavering commitment to their boxes and their system. When things work, sometimes you stick with it.

Futures Fins Changed Everything.

Many of you remember when Futures Fins hit the surf scene, there weren't many fin companies back then, really only one, FCS. I remember thinking pre-Futures Fins, "How is anyone going to top this?" Referring to FCS Fins. That said, if I'm being honest, I don't know if Futures Fins topped FCS, but they found something that worked and they've stuck with it. They found a potential "flaw" with FCS and they went hard, never looking back, Futures Fins redesigned the fin box so that the entire base of the fin sits in the box, giving the surfer the strongest anchor point possible. I remember getting Futures Fins on one of my surfboards, thinking how solid they were and what a great design it was, a single screw into the front of the box. Brilliant then, brilliant now.

Turning Future Fins into Futures Fins.

Back then I wondered what the future would hold for Futures Fins, would they fizzle out or would they stand the test of time? At this point I think it's safe to say that question has been answered, Futures Fins have become a staple of the surf industry, taking large segments of market share from FCS. We've found here at The Surfboard Warehouse that the guys that love Futures Fins are as die hard and unwavering as Futures Fins commitment to their fin boxes. I must admit, I understand their side of the story, Futures Fins are solid, as I mentioned earlier and for some surfers, when they get on a set of Futures, there's no going back. When FCS II Fins came out I found myself asking, what is Futures going to do? How are they going to respond?

Futures Surfboard Fins standing True.

Sometimes and again, I stress that I thrive on innovation, but sometimes the right thing to do is nothing at all. FCS II is a screwless fin system, hopefully this can go unsaid at this point, either way, I won't talk about that here. When FCS II came out it was interesting, I waited for a response from Futures Fins and for a while I felt like I didn't get one, but then it dawned on me. One day when talking with the then US Sales manager at Futures, he said something that hit me, "We were the best fin system and we're still the best fin system, we don't have to change anything." Boom. There is was, Futures response, they felt there was no need to stray from their fins boxes, despite the new FCS II "Screwless" system. Futures clearly felt they were still the best system on the market. I feel that surfers that surf Futures Surfboard Fins agree with that whole hardheartedly, because some of the guys we know that have been buying Futures Fins for five years are still buying Futures Fins now. Oh, and that innovation thing? Yea, take a look at the Futures Fins line, it's still there.

Futures Fins: "How to Choose the Right Set of Futures Fins."

Futures Fins in an amazing company and they offer amazing products, I stress "products", because Futures Fins offers a ton of surfboard fins. If you're reading this article I assume that you already know that your board takes Futures Fins. However, if you're not sure, keep in mind that Futures Fins are only compatible with surfboards that have Futures Fins boxes installed. Now, whether you're a novice or an expert surfer what you may not know is that a different set of fins can drastically change how a board feels and surfs. When I say drastically I mean it. Trust me when I say this, do NOT get rid of a surfboard because you don't like the way it surfs if you've never changed the fins on it. Change the fins!

It's Futures Fins, NOT Future Fins.

Before we get into the technical aspects, we want to point out that it's Futures Fins and not Future Fins. I want to clear the air, as it seems like this is an important piece of information most surfers miss. That said, the first thing to keep in mind with Futures Fins is that smaller fins are typically for smaller surfers and larger fins are for larger surfers. You may find as your surfing matures you like a "looser" feel, or "more drive". If that's the case simply buy a slightly smaller or slightly larger set for your weight range. If you have multiple boards please note that you may like smaller fins on one board and larger fins on another. Also, as a general rule if your surfing bigger waves you're going to want a bigger set of Futures Fins and vice versa.

Futures Fins and Flex Patterns.

Once you've narrowed down the size Futures Fins you like, the next thing is material. "Composite" tends to be the most flexible and least expensive, but keep in mind composite fins won't hold their flex patterns over time. With Futures Fins the next step up is "solid glass" and "hex core" fins. Glass will give you the most traditional feel, while hex core will allow for a bit more flex and in some cases are designed with a certain flex pattern in mind. With Futures Fins top of the line fins, you're typically getting some element of carbon placed strategically within the fin. This is so that Futures is able to design a specific fin to flex in a specific way which ultimately translates into more speed.

Your Template and Your Futures Fins.

The last Futures Fins fin element to keep in mind is template. At a very base level, the more upright a fin is the more it will pivot, or turn on a dime, the more rake a fin has the more it will led itself to long drawn out turns. This is where wave type comes into play. For bigger waves with an open face you're typically going to want more rake with your Futures Fins, while for more up and down, in the pocket style surfing you're going to want a more upright template. Foil also plays a part in fin selection, but that gets a bit too technical for what we want to accomplish with this particular article.

The Number of Boxes and Futures Fins.

The last thing to keep in mind when selecting a new set of Futures Fins is how many Futures Fins Boxes does your board have? Longboards can be single fin, then you have "shortboards" that can be twin fin, thruster, quad or 5-fin setups. A lot of shortboards that have Futures Fins boxes are now coming standard as a 5-fin so you have the option of running you're board as a quad or thruster. Again, generally speaking, a thruster will give you a tighter turning radius, while a quad will hold a line better. That said as your surfing evolves you'll probably gravitate towards one set up or the other.
